Located around 160 km from Kolkata, Durgapur is one of the fastest growing cities in India. It is well know that Durgapur is the steel city of eastern India and an integrated unit of Steel Authority of India, Durgapur Steel Plant, is situated in the heart of the city. There are a number of other industries which have tremendously flourished here in the past decade including cement, thermal power, chemicals, alloy steel, and petroleum. People from all parts of India have settled in Durgapur and with the rising per capita income of its population, the city is also emerging as a powerful knowledge and health centre of India.
If we talk about investment in the health sector in Durgapur, an increasing number of domestic and foreign investors in the recent past have shown interest in investing here. Recently, the city inaugurated a 500 crore project spread across the land of 50 acres and is operational since September 2014. The Project is a joint collaboration of Mani Group, SPS Group and Synergy Group, and it will turn Durgapur into the first integrated knowledge and health city of eastern India. It is proudly named as IQ City Health and Knowledge Campus as it is set to provide world-class treatment facilities to patients and medical educational facility to students.
The project is still under development and by the end of 2017 it will facilitate 750 beds from its current 300 bed capacity. Narayana Hrudayalaya group, owned by Bengaluru based cardiac surgeon Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty, will be the managing and operating partner in running few super-specialist departments at the hospital. The medical education department of IQ City Health and Knowledge Campus provides learning in hospital management, nursing and paramedical, dentistry, allied health sciences and pharmacy.
There are many nursing homes in Durgapur which have been established in recent past serving the health care needs of not only the local people but also of the surrounding districts. The Mission Hospital is the busiest medical treatment centre in Durgapur. It was established on April 2nd, 2008 and is treated as the first corporate hospital ever founded in the eastern region outside Kolkata. It spreads across an area of 3 acres and it offers a wide range of health services including 350 bed facilities, 100-bed for critical cases, dedicated maternity unit, specialized emergency ward and blood bank unit. The hospital is also renowned for its advanced pneumatic tube system and catheterization laboratory.
A government run hospital named as the Durgapur Sub-divisional Hospital and located in the Bidhannagar area also offers quality diagnosis to patients. The five hundred bed hospital offers special wards for women and children, an advanced burn care unit and a well organized operation theatre. Other two major nursing homes in Durgapur are Durgapur Steel Plant (DPL) Hospital and Vivekananda Hospital Pvt. Ltd. These hospitals also provide state of art medical facilities and people from the neighbouring towns like Raniganj, Asansol, Andal and other districts also visit here for various medical treatments.
